These are my favorite gadgets, toys, and accessories for geeks, and those who aspire to be geeks. Whether you're a fellow geek, are curious about gadgets, or are looking for a gift or toy for a geek friend or relative, you'll find something fun on this list.
PS: If you like this stuff, please give me some stars before you leave. Thanks!
Need a new way to pop balloons? How about this laser?
but seriously, this laser is no toy
Wow! This Hercules laser looks amazing. Besides that, I'm sure it has some very useful real-world applications. Among the capabilities listed on the Laserglow site, it is visible in direct sun, can light a fireworks fuse, pop a balloon, cut through electrical tape, and even burn through plastic. According to the manufacturer, Hercules is "the world's most powerful portable laser."
Is anyone else having flashbacks to the movie Real Genius? Remember when Val Kilmer and the other genius geek used that giant laser to fill Professor Hathaway's house with popcorn? But I digress...
The Hercules will set you back around $1000 to $3000, depending on which model you choose.
Bring a little life into your space with this little greenhouse
This USB-powered greenhouse looks like a great addition to the workspace -- if you can make the space! Plug it into a USB port to light it up. It comes with marigold seeds, but if you're not fond of marigolds, you can grow anything you like. How about some lettuce? Or basil? Or peppermint? Gee, I could go on like this forever, but I'll spare you... Whatever you decide to plant inside your little garden egg, you'll be able to keep tabs on the mini-greenhouse environment with the software provided. Even if you don't have a window in your office or cube, now you can have a view of a real living thing! USB Powered Mini Greenhouse
For geeks who cook: hand icon oven mitts
Check out these cute and unabashedly dorky oven mitts! As a geek mom who enjoys baking cookies and treats, I would definitely use these mitts in my kitchen. And I can see my hubby using them to get his Hot Pockets out of the microwave. :-) From jacky-o.
Can cleaning up your desk be fun? Maybe...
This retro-style upright vacuum is a miniature desk cleaner. Plug it into your USB port and suck those nasty dust bunnies and stale crumbs out from under your keyboard and peripherals! I'm not sure how practical this would be for cleaning hard-to-reach areas, like between your keyboard keys, because it doesn't seem to come with a crevice tool. But I can totally imagine using it on my desktop, if I could get it cleared off sometime.
I think these little USB rechargeable batteries are awesome. They are NiMH cells, rechargeable at any USB port. You don't need a cradle and cable. Just charge and go. Not only are they easy to use, but they are nicer for the environment, by preventing the disposal of lots of regular batteries. Batteries in landfills are bad!
In addition to AA, they will be available in AAA, 9 volt, and sizes for cell phones and PDAs. Visit usbcell.com for more information.

Deck out your desk with these USB Christmas lights
Add some festive lights to your laptop computer or desktop monitor with this plug and play USB Christmas light string!
The 10 foot strand of multicolor LED lights is enough to go around your monitor a couple of times, or weave it around the collectibles on your desk to create a colorful holiday-scape! I think this would make a great gift for that certain person in the office who loves to decorate. Fa la la! From softwareoutlet.com.
Tired of ninja sneak-attacks from nosey co-workers?
Obviously, the best way to prevent being attacked from behind while you're sitting at your desk is to face your doorway and put your back to the wall. But perhaps this isn't possible in your office or cube, or maybe it interferes with the feng shui of your space. So you're forced to work with your back to your door, leaving yourself vulnerable to all kinds of inconvenient over-the-shoulder interruptions!
Foil those pesky office lurkers with this handy rear-view mirror for your monitor! The 3 inch convex mirror gives you a wide-angle view of the scene behind you, so you never have to be surprised again. Get it at The Spoon Sisters.
Say "I lava you" to your computer ;-)
Give your desktop something special with a USB lava lamp. These come in green, blue, and pink, and for less than $10, make a great little gift for your favorite computer. Your faithful work companion, where you spend almost every waking minute, who knows your touch better than your mate. Um, yeah. Anyway, check it out.
Wi-Fi Detector Shirt This is a very cool shirt. No longer do you have to open your laptop or look at your wi-fi signal strength indicator to find a hot spot. Just check your chest!
Not only does this shirt feature an animated signal strength indicator, but the dynamic display panel is removable, so you can wash the shirt! (Don't forget to remove the battery pack from its secret hiding place first.) Even if people have no idea what your shirt is doing, you will definitely get noticed. And the people who are smart enough to appreciate your shirt will flock around you with their wireless devices.
The "most difficult puzzle ever"
are you intrigued?
The ISIS is said to be the world's most difficult puzzle. It is for the brainiac puzzle connoisseur, and will set you back about $200. It is made of sliding bands of hieroglyph-engraved aluminum, and each handmade orb has its own unique solution. The puzzle comes with 10 encrypted clues to help you along. The challenge is to position the bands in the right combination to unlock the ISIS. Once you crack the code, you gain access to the Award Zone, where you can win cash and prizes. You can get it from The Sharper Image.
Star Wars Darth Vader Nesting Dolls: a new collectible from a classic geek flick series
The Dark Side has never been cuter. How adorable are these little Darth and Anakin nesting dolls? I love these, and I think they would appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages. Imagine giving these to your favorite little Padawans for Christmas, and getting your own set to display on your shelf in your office or cube! You'll be the envy of all the office geeks! The set is about $10, and other figures are available, including an Obi-wan set, a Wookiee set, and others.
Here is an excerpt from the description at StarWarsShop.com: it's almost poetic that a youthful, innocent Anakin Skywalker should be hidden deep within the dark and menacing shell of Darth Vader. Each individual character sits on removable feet. The large Dath Vader doll includes unique features such as a sculpted removable helmet, mask, cape and lightsaber!
Each figure houses two more figures within, measuring 6.8 to 8.2 cm for the largest, 5.8 cm for the medium, and 4.8 cm for the smallest. Each set of figures also comes in a 30th anniversary window box showcasing all three figures. Click here to visit StarWarsShop.com
One of my favorite places to get geek toys and gifts: ThinkGeek.com
I have shopped at ThinkGeek.com for several special occasions, and have always been happy with the stuff.
USB Stewie for your favorite Family Guy fans
Can you imagine having a little Stewie on your desk, mouthing off in response to your typing? Will the fun ever end?!
VioLight UV Ultraviolet Sterilization Disinfection Hand Wand You know how it feels when someone coughs or sneezes into his/her hand, and then uses your mouse, borrows a pen, picks up your phone, squeezes your stress ball, or types on your keyboard? Disgusting! I admit that I am a hypersensitive germ-phobe, but I have to think that even normal people think that's gross.
Usually, you have to break out the disinfectant spray or alcohol swabs to clean up your stuff. Not anymore! You can just wave this UV sanitizing wand over your surface and it zaps the bugs for you (99.9% of them). I've not used it myself, but I hope Santa brings me one. It kills fungus, dust mites, SARS, bird flu, anthrax, mold, and more. The obsessive-compulsive hand washing side of me is very excited!
You know how you never have enough USB ports? Or tape?
USB Tape Dispenser Hub This little gadget is a multipurpose productivity enhancer -- or at least you can put it on your expense report that way. It looks like a fun way to dispense tape, as well as provide a hub for extra USB devices. You know, like your essential USB rocket launcher, USB lava lamp, etc. For $17.99, it's an affordable addition to your geek gadget collection.
The ultimate geek gadget: the Segway Personal Transporter
I have never been on a Segway, but I want one! This has to be the ultimate geek machine. The Segway is an electric upright scooter, which can be used indoors or outdoors. There are all-terrain models, a golf model, police model, and lots of accessories for personalization and utility. Riding a Segway has been compared to flying, because it allows you to glide along in freedom, and you can go just about anywhere.
Sure, I work at home, so I'd just use it to get from the computer to the kitchen and back, with occasional stops at the bathroom. But maybe you could use it for some real commuting. It's supposed to be great for short commutes! Imagine sailing past all of that stuck traffic during rush hour... Ahhhh!
The Segway can reach speeds up to 12.5 mph/20 kph, and can travel as far as 24 miles/38 km on a single battery charge, depending on the terrain, payload, and riding style. To get your very own, visit Segway to find a local dealer.

USB Missile Launcher & Office Toys

Star Wars Lightsabers These lightsabers are Lucasfilm LTD licensed collectibles, and look at how beautiful they are! Each weapon features a polycarbonate blade with realistic lighting, permanently attached to a metal hilt, with authentic sound effects taken from the movies. Each one comes with a display stand. Although they are not recommended for dueling, the blades are said to be pretty durable.
You get to choose a model from one of your favorite characters: Darth Maul - Red Blade - (episode I A Phantom Menace) (Can be assembled as a double bladed lightsaber or used as two, battle damaged, single blade lightsabers.) Darth Vader - Red Blade - (episode V Empire Strikes Back) Mace Windu - Purple Blade - (Episode II Attack Of The Clones) Obi Wan - Blue Blade - (Episode III Revenge of the Sith) Yoda - Green Blade - (Episode II & III)
Best geek gadget multitasker: iPhone
You've heard about the iPhone, you've seen the commercials. The iPhone is sleek, easy to use, and does just about everything but your laundry. Apple has reduced the price on the iPhone, making it more affordable for more people. It's still out of my reach, of course, but this is definitely on my wish list of drool-inducing geek toys. Even if you can't afford to buy yourself one, you should visit your local Apple Store just to play with it. Or you can read all about the iPhone at apple.com.

If you really want to impress your friends, give this a try!
This Laser Stars Projector looks so amazing! It's not a real star map or planetarium-type projector. It's just supposed to look really awesome. Here is some of the information from ThinkGeek:
It's a unit about 10inches tall that projects a combination of green laser stars and blue (slightly ultraviolet-ish blue) clouds onto your ceiling, walls, pets, etc. Both the clouds and the stars are constantly moving and morphing, just like a proper Universe should. And there are literally thousands of green laser stars to look at. There are two ways you can adjust your Laser Stars Projector, first you can pivot the projector itself 180 degrees horizontally around the base so that you can control *where* it is projecting in your room. It can literally fill up an entire ceiling and portions of several walls at once. And the other thing you can adjust is the intensity of the blue gaseous clouds, from zero to full intensity.
The regular price is $199, and you can get it from ThinkGeek.com
